Swordtail

from: 4.50

Assorted Swordtail (Xiphophorous helleri) is a very popular community aquarium fish. Their popularity stems from their ease of care and peaceful nature. They have quite unique types of fins with a great variety of colours, making them commonly referred to as BLACK swordtails.

In captivity, swordtail has been selectively interbred, resulting in a wider range of mixtures of colours. The name swordtail gives justice to its appearance – specifically, the male’s appearance. The male’s caudal fin protrudes along its lower half, the length of which can reach up to half of the body’s entire length. The female caudal fin has no such protrusion.

Description

A perfect starter fish! Swordtails (Xiphophorus hellerii) are peaceful community fish that reproduce with ease. They are livebearers, meaning the females release live fry rather than laying eggs. It is recommended to keep more females than males, as males can easily harass females with relentless attempts to reproduce, leading to stress in the females. Dominant males will begin developing swords and a modified anal fin, called a gonopodium, around 1-1.5″ in length. However, it is not uncommon for less dominant males to maintain the physical appearance of a female until much later in life (even as large as 4″!) You will receive a mixture of Swordtails we have in stock at the time of ordering. We cannot guarantee specific colors.
