Peacock rainbowfish is one of the most beautiful fish in the aquarium world. It is a very hardy and adaptable fish once it gets settled in the aquarium. You will find them very active, amusing, and intelligent if kept in a healthy environment. Peacock Rainbowfish is known by many other names such as Neon Rainbowfish, and Dwarf Rainbowfish, scientifically known as Melanotaenia praecox. It origins from New Guinea, small areas of the theMamberamo river system, near Iritoi, Dabra, and Siwa. It is widely available in pet stores at a reasonable and affordable price.
Peacock Rainbow Fish will reach up to 2 to 2-1/2 inches (6 cm) in length. This fish is generally peaceful with other fish species of similar size, but smaller shrimp or fish fry may be eaten by them.
The life span of Peacock RainbowFish is about 3 to 5 years when kept in a well-maintained aquarium.
It is very easy to identify their sexes. The male fins have a red color outline while female fins have a yellow and orange color outline one can easily distinguish between males from females by just looking at their fin colors. These colors get more vivid and dark in color as they grew in age. Another thing to consider while sexing is that females have more silver color as compare to males.
Naturally, peacock rainbowfish lives in very large schools in areas with dense vegetation and plants and fast-flowing water, so planted tanks with floating plants are best to replicate their natural habitat conditions. Doing this not only increases their life span but also brings out their true natural behavior. Peacock rainbow fish is a shoaling species and lives in large groups so you should keep at least a group of 6 or more to bring out their natural behavior.
Naturally, peacock rainbowfish live in heavily planted and shaded areas, so densely planted tanks with some floating plants are strongly recommended. Peacock rainbowfish are displayed to the best effect when they are kept in aquariums with floating plants to diffuse the light.
An ideal water temperature range is between 75–81°F (24–27°C), Water Hardness in between 8 – 12 dKH, and water pH 6.5. These water parameters are ideal for peacock rainbowfish. Well-oxygenated water is also important since Peacock Rainbowfish naturally inhabit fast-flowing waters.
A minimum of 20-gallon fishtank is recommended to keep a school of 6 or more Peacock rainbow fish.
Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish are omnivores, which means they can eat both animal and plant-based matter in the wild. In captivity, they should be fed a high-quality commercially available fish flake or pelleted food to maintain good health.
Always buy commercially prepared foods frequently and in small amounts, as they lose their nutritional value and quickly deteriorates with the passage of time
You can also include live foods in their diets such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and tubifex worms. They also love a plant-based Diet also, so if you don’t have any live plants for them to feed on, consider giving them boiled lettuce leaves. Feed these fish several times a day and only what they can consume in under 2 minutes.
Females spawn up to 50 eggs per day over several days the eggs stick to plants and decors in aquariums. Eggs hatch within a week. Feeding the adults well makes them less likely to eat their eggs or offspring.
Peacock rainbow fish is a very active and shoaling fish. It must be kept in a school of at least 6 or more to bring out their natural behavior. It is very easy to care once settled in the aquarium. Peacock rainbow fish is omnivore so you can feed them both plant and animal-based food.
