Widespread West Pacific, but distinct geographical forms, and replaced by Indian Ocean sibling west of Bali. Various shallow protected reef habitats but mainly inshore. Several other similar Halichoeres species in which females are difficult to distinguished from each other with near identical colour patterns. Males differ in various ways most obviously in the fins, such as lines versus spots. This species has lines on the caudal fin, usually ending in black, forming a spot when fin is compressed. Length to 12cm.
