Symphysodon cichlids (discus) are native to the calm waters of the Amazon basin. They mainly live in small reservoirs, small rivers and bays of black water ecosystems. Low pH (5.0 +/- 0.5) due to the lack of buffer molecules and low conductivity are the characteristics of these waters. And although aquarists who are just starting their adventure with breeding Symphysodon fish (discus fish) often want to create the most natural conditions for these fish, such action may prove to be a much greater challenge than simply allowing the pH level and conductivity to be slightly higher .
Most Symphysodon (discus fish) fish available for aquarists were caught from the natural environment for the first time only 10 years ago, hence fish grown in artificial tanks are the basis of the aquarium of today’s aquarist who likes this type of cast. The water conditions in which Symphysodon fish (discus fish) can be kept are quite different from their natural environment, mainly due to the ease of breeding such fish in relatively hard waters with a high degree of alkalinity, characteristic of the United States and a large continental part Europe (where there are many cichlid species of the Symphysodon genus; while the water conditions in Southeast Asia, where most of these captive fish originate, also have greater hardness and alkalinity than the parameters typical for black water ecosystems).
When placing Symphysodon fish (discus) in the aquarium, it is recommended to keep the water pH at 5.5 – 7.0, dGH at 10-15 and dKH at 3-5. It is also good practice to achieve the same parameters such as those in which the fish were bred (or harvested) followed by continuous maintenance of such conditions.
A large number of popular aquarium fish species, such as red and other neonatal, pomacanthus, oblong cichlids and uaru fish, live in the same waters from which Symphysodon fish originate. Therefore, DiscusCode can also be successfully used in aquariums inhabited by these fish.
Instructions for use
Basic use of the preparation: Shake well before use. Use 0.5 ml of the preparation (about 10 drops) on 94.6 l of aquarium water, once every two days. Using the above recommendations, 250 ml of the preparation is enough to treat 9,464 l of water. The above dose can also be used in multi-species freshwater aquariums.
Advanced use of the preparation: With the exception of tests measuring iron concentration, an average aquarist cannot obtain aquarium tests that reliably measure the concentration of many other micronutrients and trace elements in a freshwater aquarium. Therefore, it is not possible to accurately determine the dose of the preparation that should be used, hence the appearance of the organisms in the aquarium should be closely monitored and on the basis of this decision should be made to increase or decrease it.
It is recommended to start using the product at a dose of 1 ml of the preparation per 37.85 l of aquarium water, once a week for the first 4 weeks. This dose corresponds to a dosage of 0.14 ml of the preparation (about 3 drops) per 37.85 l of water per day. After this time, gradually increase the weekly dose to 2 ml for every 37.85 l of water over the next 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, keep the dose at this level.
It is recommended to start dispensing the preparation with small doses that will not harm the organisms in the aquarium, and at the same time will allow you to observe subtle changes in the appearance of the tank and allow you to assess the effectiveness of the preparation and decide on the need for its use.
Daily use of the preparation at the appropriate doses allows you to maintain a more stable element concentration than the weekly dosage, during which the amount of elements in water reaches a peak only just after the preparation and gradually decreases in the following days of the week. Although microelements and trace elements are necessary for key biological processes to occur, excessive overdose of these components can be harmful to aquarium organisms.
Microelements and trace elements become inaccessible in aquariums mainly due to adsorption to organic matter particles. Therefore, aquariums in which large amounts of often dead organic material occur may require a slightly higher dosage of the preparation to compensate for those elements and microelements that undergo the binding process. In any case, dead organic compounds should be removed from the aquarium as accurately as possible because they have a negative impact on water quality. The use of activated carbon removes trace elements and microelements both passively and actively, which is why the preparation should be dosed only after the application of the carbon filtration medium.
